Dayoutoftheoffice fresh as BC Juvenile Fillies contender

Barbara D. Livingston
Dayoutoftheoffice earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure with Saturday's triumph in the Frizette.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Tim Hamm’s decision to give Dayoutoftheoffice a mid-summer break should have her a pretty fresh horse entering the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies next month at Keeneland. Her performance in Saturday’s Grade 1 Frizette makes her a dangerous one as well.

Civil Union targets Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf

Barbara D. Livingston
Civil Union's Flower Bowl triumph on Saturday was her fourth straight win.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Shug McGaughey has taken the conservative route with Civil Union most of the year. But after her victory over My Sister Nat in Saturday’s Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park, and after consulting with owner Joe Allen, McGaughey will send Civil Union to Keeneland for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 7.

Owner Joe Allen “feels like if she comes out of it well, it’s worth taking a chance,” McGaughey said Sunday morning.

As of Sunday, at least, Civil Union came out of the victory in good shape.

Chief Cicatriz led throughout en route to a neck victory in Saturday's Ft. Bliss Stakes.

Chief Cicatriz is under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint after running one of the best races of his career late last month at Remington Park.

He won the David M. Vance with a Beyer Speed Figure of 102 on the Oklahoma Derby undercard Sept. 27. Chief Cicatriz rallied from off the pace for a two-length win, and covered six furlongs on a fast track in 1:08.52.

“He’s back to where he was a couple years ago,” trainer Shawn Davis said. “He ran big. That’s the best race he’s run since the Aristides at Churchill Downs.”

Civil Union (right) returned $8.10 in winning the Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont on Saturday.

ELMONT, N.Y. - There was a change of tactics, but the same result for Civil Union, who rallied from next-to-last to win the Grade 1, $250,000 Flower Bowl Stakes by a head over My Sister Nat at Belmont Park on Saturday.

The victory was the fourth straight for Civil Union, who didn’t clear her first-level allowance condition until June 21. She has since followed that with a listed stakes victory, the Grade 2 Glens Falls, and now the Flower Bowl.

“When she started off this winter in Florida I never thought she’d be a Grade 1 winner,” trainer Shug McGaughey said.

ELMONT, N.Y. - There was only one negative trainer Todd Pletcher found in finally winning his first Jockey Club Gold Cup on Saturday at Belmont Park.

“I’ve been trying for 25 years to win this race and the purse is $250,000,” Pletcher said, laughing, after Happy Saver squeezed through an opening along the inside and outfinished Mystic Guide to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup by three-quarters of a length. "But it’s more about the win than it is the purse.”
