Belmont Clocker: Forte follows in Tapit Trice's footsteps

BELMONT, N.Y. – Forte had himself a tough act to follow Saturday at Belmont Park after stablemate Tapit Trice turned in a very impressive five-furlong breeze here the previous morning in preparation for his upcoming start in the Belmont Stakes on June 10. And the reigning 2-year-old champion was not only up to the task, he turned in nearly a carbon copy of Tapit Trice’s big effort, both from a visual standpoint as well as on the watch.

Belmont Stakes: Tapit Trice has Pletcher, Tapit, and a strong Friday work going for him

Tapit Trice works at BEL May 26 2023
Susie Raisher
Tapit Trice, with Fernando Rivera up, worked five furlongs at Belmont Park on Friday in 1:00.16 and then galloped out a mile.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Todd Pletcher has enjoyed great success in the Belmont Stakes with also-rans from the Kentucky Derby. The stallion Tapit has enjoyed sensational success in the Belmont having produced four of the last nine winners of the third leg of the Triple Crown.

Those two factors alone make the Grade 1 winner Tapit Trice a contender in the Belmont Stakes here on June 10. Add in a good-looking workout Friday morning at Belmont Park and you just may have the favorite for the 155th Test of the Champion.

Durkin will return to the booth for Fox Belmont telecast

Barbara D. Livingston
Tom Durkin was the NYRA race caller for 24 years. He last called a race in Sept. 2014, in the Spinaway Stakes.

Fox television is making a splashtastic foray into the Triple Crown.

When national Fox broadcasts the Belmont Stakes for the first time on June 10, it will bring Tom Durkin out of retirement to call the race, it was announced Thursday.

Durkin, 72, retired from the New York Racing Association in Sept. 2014 after 24 years, his final call being the 2014 Spinaway when he said that Condo Commando was “splashtastic” as she cruised to a 14-length win in the slop at Saratoga.

Arcangelo not definite for Belmont Stakes despite Peter Pan win

Dom Napolitano
Arcangelo (far left) was given a 97 Beyer Speed Figure for Saturday's triumph in the Peter Pan.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Arcangelo's connections haven’t been in a hurry with their 3-year-old thus far, and that’s not going to change as they map out a plan for where the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes winner will make his next start.

While the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on June 10 will definitely be in the conversation, it will be a little while before trainer Jena Antonucci and owner Jon Ebbert make a decision.

Lord Miles breezes, likely for Belmont Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Lord Miles breezed a half-mile in 49.50 Friday morning at Gulfstream Park, his first work since being scratched from the Kentucky Derby.

Lord Miles breezed four furlongs in 49.50 seconds late Friday morning at Palm Meadows, his first work since being scratched from the Kentucky Derby by Churchill Downs officials following the sudden deaths of two of his stablemates in races run at the track during the first two cards of the current meeting.

Lord Miles, who earned his way into the Derby lineup by virtue of his upset victory in the Grade 2 Wood, shipped back to South Florida earlier this week along with the rest of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.’s horses who were stabled at Churchill Downs at the time of the incidents.

Differing pace scenarios necessitated second look at Beyer Figures for Belmont, Brooklyn

After Mo Donegal earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 98 winning the Belmont Stakes, some readers looked at the data for the day and questioned whether that number should be higher.

Mo Donegal ran the 1 1/2 miles of the Belmont in 2:28.28. Earlier in the card, some of the best older long-distance runners in the East contested the prestigious Brooklyn Stakes, and Fearless won it in a slow 2:30.45. He received a Beyer Figure of 95. Mo Donegal ran significantly faster than Fearless; so why didn’t he get a significantly higher figure?

Mo Donegal points to Travers, Nest targets Alabama

Barbara D. Livingston
Mo Donegal, trained by Todd Pletcher, was given a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The blanket of carnations draped over the railing by the parking spot marked for trainer Todd Pletcher at his barn Sunday morning told the story of Saturday's Belmont Stakes. On Sunday morning, they were decoration, but on Saturday, they were laid across the withers of Mo Donegal, who provided Pletcher with his fourth Belmont victory in a race in which he swept the top two spots.
