Golden Tempo will stick with Saratoga, trainer DeVaux says

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Cherie DeVaux and Golden Tempo celebrate their Belmont Stakes victory on Sunday at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - There will not be a media tour this time around.

Following Golden Tempo’s victory in the Kentucky Derby, which made Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer to win that race, DeVaux was everywhere, from the Today Show to Inside Edition to multiple podcasts to Yankee Stadium, where she threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a game.

After Golden Tempo’s victory in Saturday’s $2 million Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, DeVaux said she will continue the far-less-glamorous life of a horse trainer.

Belmont Stakes 2026: Pletcher believes Renegade sitting on another big race

Renegade trains at SAR June 3 2026
Barbara D. Livingston
After a nightmare start from post 1 in the Kentucky Derby, Renegade regrouped and finished strongly to be beaten only a neck by his now-Belmont rival Golden Tempo.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Renegade didn’t generate the kind of buzz a talented Todd Pletcher-trained 2-year-old typically does when he debuted at Saratoga last August. Certainly, nobody was talking about him after he got beat 18 1/4 lengths by It’s Our Time, who ran a freaky kind of race winning by 17 3/4 lengths.

Pletcher wasn’t discouraged. He had told owner Mike Repole going into the race there was something about this son of Into Mischief that he liked and he wasn’t dismayed afterward.

Belmont Stakes 2026: On brink of milestones, Pletcher takes time to reflect

Barbara D. Livingston
A victory Saturday would be Pletcher’s fifth in the Belmont. That would tie him for fourth all-time with Woody Stephens.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In a career that will soon eclipse 6,000 wins, it could be hard to single out an individual highlight. For Todd Pletcher, not so much.

It is 19 years since the filly Rags to Riches overcame a stumble at the start and outfinished Preakness winner Curlin, a subsequent two-time Horse of the Year, with a 23.83-second final quarter-mile that propelled her to win the 2007 Belmont Stakes by a head. It was the first win in a Triple Crown race for Pletcher, who has since won three more Belmonts and two Kentucky Derbies.

Belmont 2026: Jose Ortiz's bold move to leave N.Y. has paid off handsomely

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Jose Ortiz was the leading rider on the New York Racing Association circuit three times during the 13 years he was based here and that didn’t include 2017, the year he won the Eclipse Award as North America’s champion jockey.

Two years ago, Ortiz made the move to Kentucky – and in the winter Louisiana – and things are only getting better.

Belmont Stakes 2026: In the right hands, Golden Tempo was molded into a classic winner

Barbara D. Livingston
When Cherie DeVaux first laid eyes on Golden Tempo, the trainer thought he lacked precocity. She gave him time to develop and sent him out for his first start on Dec. 20 at Fair Grounds.

A bay colt by Curlin and out of the Bernardini mare Carrumba came into this world on Feb. 7, 2023, foaled at famed Claiborne Farm, where he spent the first 18 months of his existence parading through paddocks, frolicking in fields. Late in the summer of 2024, the bucolic chapter of this colt’s life came to an end. Off to Williston, Fla., to be broken at Eisaman Equine.

Belmont 2026: Commandment's bandwagon emptied out after Derby seventh

Barbara D. Livingston
Commandment didn’t have the smoothest of trips in the Derby. The Belmont may work out differently.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Commandment seems to be the forgotten horse of this year’s Triple Crown heading into Saturday’s $2 million Belmont Stakes at Saratoga.

Despite being a multiple graded stakes winner and one of just three Grade 1 winners in the field, there doesn’t seem to be much buzz surrounding Commandment, who finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby, beaten 5 1/2 lengths by Golden Tempo.

Belmont Stakes 2026: Brown running three horses, each for a different reason

Emerging Market trains at CD April 29 2026
Debra A. Roma
Emerging Market finished 10th in the Derby while making just his third career start. He should benefit from the experience.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Chad Brown is a numbers guy. But he’s also a realist. He knows that just because he has a third of the field entered in Saturday’s $2 million Belmont Stakes at Saratoga doesn’t mean he’s going to be successful.

“The math checks out that I have a better chance to win, but that’s about it,” Brown, who is still seeking his first Belmont win, said Monday morning at Saratoga. “I don’t know if I have the right three.”

Ocelli passes on Belmont Stakes, targets Ohio Derby instead

Barbara D. Livingston
Ocelli, who finished fourth in the Preakness after coming in third in the Kentucky Derby, will skip the Belmont Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Ocelli is getting off the Triple Crown trail.

Ocelli, a maiden who finished third in the Kentucky Derby on May 2 and fourth in the Preakness on May 16, will not run in the $2 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday, trainer Whit Beckman said Sunday. Instead, Ocelli will be pointed to the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown on June 20.

Belmont Stakes 2026: Emerging Market taking Derby lessons into Belmont

Barbara D. Livingston
Emerging Market worked a half-mile in 48.22 seconds over Saratoga's Oklahoma training track on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The big discussion surrounding Emerging Market entering the Kentucky Derby was his lack of experience. With only two starts under his belt, Emerging Market was attempting to become the first horse since Leonatus in 1883 to win the Derby in just his third career start.
