Sovereignty won the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga last Saturday, the second time the race was run at the track.

Making official what had been widely known for a long time, the Belmont Stakes will be held in Saratoga in 2026 and run at 1 1/4 miles, the third straight year the third leg of the Triple Crown will be held at the upstate New York track.

The Belmont, typically run at 1 1/2 miles at Belmont Park, has been run at Saratoga since 2024 due to the renovation of Belmont Park. That track, in Elmont, N.Y., is expected to re-open in September 2026 and the Belmont Stakes will return to Belmont in the spring of 2027.

Late shakeup of Belmont Day card not all bad

Barbara D. Livingston
Handle on the Belmont Stakes this year was $55.46 million, an 8.94 percent decline compared to last year’s total of $60.91 million.

Just before noon on Saturday, the New York Racing Association announced that its two Grade 1 grass races on the 14-race Belmont Stakes card would be moved to Sunday, while all of the remaining grass races on the card would be moved to the dirt.

With that, a blockbuster card appeared to be headed for a big-time bust.

Jockey Junior Alvarado's 'amazing journey' continues with Belmont triumph

Debra A. Roma
Jockey Junior Alvarado celebrates his first Belmont win aboard Sovereignty on Saturday at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It was just six days before the 2025 Florida Derby, on March 23, when jockey Junior Alvarado’s dream to finally win the Kentucky Derby nearly ended. The 38-year-old veteran suffered a slightly fractured scapula when his mount, the Bill Mott-trained Term, fell after suffering a heart attack less than a quarter-mile into a maiden race on the turf at Gulfstream Park.

Belmont Stakes: Sovereignty outruns Journalism again

Barbara D. Livingston
Jockey Junior Alvarado celebrates Sovereignty's victory in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The fresh 3-year-old - and now undoubtedly the best 3-year-old - won the Belmont Stakes.

Sovereignty, who beat Journalism by 1 1/2 lengths in the Kentucky Derby five weeks ago at Churchill Downs, was purposely held out of the Preakness two weeks later by his connections to point to the Belmont. Sovereignty delivered a performance on Saturday at Saratoga that was even better than in Louisville, running away from Journalism, the Preakness winner, in the final furlong, to win the Belmont by three decisive lengths.

Belmont Stakes 2025: Journalism tough like his sire

Barbara D. Livingston
Journalism's sire is Curlin, shown here winning the 2007 Preakness Stakes over Street Sense.

Curlin ran with distinction through the three Triple Crown races in 2007. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby in just his fourth career start, won the Preakness Stakes, and finished a hard-fought second to fellow champion Rags to Riches in the Belmont Stakes. On Saturday, his son Journalism, who has helped cement Curlin’s reputation as one of the most consistent active sires in the American classics, will become the only member of his crop to start in all three 2025 Triple Crown races.

Belmont Stakes 2025: Rodriguez following sire Authentic's late-blooming path

Barbara D. Livingston
Rodriguez was scratched from the Kentucky Derby with a foot issue that also caused him to miss the Preakness Stakes.

One June 7, 2020, the Triple Crown series had not yet begun due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Authentic had finished second in his first Grade 1 start, the Santa Anita Derby. Fate dictated that his emergence on the Triple Crown scene would come late, and it worked out for him. Authentic won the Haskell Invitational in July and the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby – the second leg of the Triple Crown that year following the June 20 Belmont Stakes – before finishing second in the Preakness Stakes and winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic to earn Horse of the Year honors.

Fierceness, White Abarrio draw posts 1-2 for Metropolitan Handicap

Barbara D. Livingston
White Abarrio drew post 2 for Saturday's Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Fierceness and White Abarrio will line up side by side for their showdown in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga.

Fierceness, the 2024 Travers winner and 2-year-old champion of 2023, drew the rail in the Met Mile, which drew a field of only five, but four of those horses have combined to win 13 of their last 16 starts.
