Trainer Steve Asmussen has a chance to pick up some Black Friday shopping money on Wednesday afternoon with Way Beyond in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte at Delta Downs – and so do horseplayers on a card featuring a reduced takeout of 10 percent on all wagers. “We need it to buy Christmas presents,” Asmussen quipped. The Wednesday card is the second of six in which Delta is offering the reduced takeout. It also will be available on Dec. 22-23 and Dec. 29-30. The cards all have a special afternoon post, with the program Wednesday beginning at 12:55 p.m. Central. Delta will not race Thursday for Thanksgiving. The Jean Lafitte for 2-year-olds has drawn a competitive field of seven that includes Churchill Downs allowance winner Oscar’s Hope, Colonial Downs stakes winner Casa Cielo, and Delta stakes winner Randemonium. Way Beyond, who was third in the same allowance as probable favorite Oscar’s Hope, will be stretching out in distance for Wednesday’s race. The 7 1/2-furlong stakes is a two-turn configuration on the six-furlong track at Delta. “He’s a versatile horse that I think will handle the smaller racetrack,” Asmussen said. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! He has tactical speed and will break from post 6 for Ed and Susie Orr. “He’ll handle nicely,” Asmussen said. “He’ll handle really well.” Oscar’s Hope is another looking to win beyond six furlongs for the first time. He owns the field’s best collection of Beyer Speed Figures. Oscar’s Hope put up a career-high 82 when he won a maiden special weight in September at Saratoga. Oscar’s Hope has tactical speed and figures to be prominent from post 2. Vicente Del-Cid has the mount for trainer Tom Amoss. Casa Cielo is proven over a route of ground as a stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles. The win came on turf at Colonial, and he will be making his first start on dirt Wednesday. Casa Cielo shows some strong works over the Churchill main track ahead of the Jean Lafitte. James Graham has the mount from post 7 for trainer Keith Desormeaux. Randemonium is proven at two turns at Delta by virtue of his win in the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy on Nov. 1. Since that start, he has been flattered, with third-place finisher Mr Mo Money coming back in his next out to win the $100,000 Joseph R. Peluso last Thursday at Fair Grounds. Randemonium had won a maiden special weight at Delta one start prior to the Louisiana Legacy. It was at the same seven-furlong distance as the stakes. Randemonium is a son of Cloud Computing trained by Benard Chatters. ◗ Don Stevens is celebrating 22 years as the Delta Downs announcer this month. He came to the Vinton, La., track in November 2003. Stevens, 61, had previously called at Remington Park and overall has been an announcer for 27 years. “I try to be clear and accurate,” he said. “That’s my main thing. As a race fan all my life, I know how important it is to know where your horse is at and be able to understand the announcer.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
