INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Victor’s Cry, returning to the scene of his biggest win, rallied from ninth to first in the final half-mile of the $250,000 Citation Handicap to take the Grade 2 race for older turf horses on Saturday at Hollywood Park. Victor’s Cry, an 11-1 shot, was in front of just one horse, favored Court Vision, during the run down the backstretch. But he started moving powerfully on the far turn, then was able to knife between horses at mid-stretch and went on to post a 1 3/4-length victory. In a blanket finish for second, Proudinsky, at 15-1, finished a nose in front of third-place Meteore, a 28-1 shot who was a head in front of the rallying Court Vision. The $1 trifecta on those three outsiders returned $1,943.60. Victor’s Cry ($24.40) won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile here on Memorial Day, but was winless in three starts since. His regular jockey, Corey Nakatani, abandoned ship, choosing instead to ride Ryehill Dreamer. As a result, Victor Espinoza picked up the mount from Eoin Harty, who trains Victor’s Cry for Equilete Stable. Victor’s Cry was timed in a swift 1:39.86 for 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf course. The win was his sixth in 21 lifetime starts. He is 3-for-5 on the Hollywood turf course. “His last two works were super,” Harty said. “I actually prayed when they were drawing the race that he would draw the rail and save some ground. Victor was able to get him to relax early on. He’s got a good three-eighths of a mile run.”
