Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's kicked off his second season in style, coasting to a 5 3/4-length victory in the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby on Saturday afternoon at Thistledown. This was the fourth career stakes victory for Two Phil's ($3.20), a 3-year-old son of Hard Spun trained by Larry Rivelli for Patricia's Hope LLC, Phillip Sagan, and Madaket Stables. The colt won the Grade 3 Street Sense at Churchill Downs and the Shakopee Juvenile at Canterbury Park last year as a juvenile. He has not missed the board in five starts this year, all in graded stakes company, with a win in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby in March at Turfway Park propelling him into the Kentucky Derby. In the Derby, Two Phil's was never more than two lengths off Verifying through that colt's sharp opening splits, and led at the quarter pole. He gave way grudgingly late to finish second by a length to the rallying Mage. Making Two Phil's' performance even more impressive, the other horses who had been near the early pace in the Derby finished in the back half of the field. Following that strong effort, Rivelli bypassed the other two races in the Triple Crown, taking his stable star back to his base at Hawthorne in Illinois to prepare for a summer and fall campaign. After a brief break, Two Phil's breezed four times in preparation for his return to the races, including a pair of bullet moves.   Two Phil's was away well in the Ohio Derby, and tucked back to be a clear, stalking fourth early under Gerardo Corrales, who picked up the mount for Saturday following an injury to regular rider Jareth Loveberry. Henry Q was hustled away from the rail post for the lead, with second choice Bishops Bay ceding the lead to that foe through the opening half in 47.42 seconds. Bishops Bay and Henry Q had been second and third, respectively, to subsequent Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo in the Grade 3 Peter Pan last out. Bishops Bay took over from a spent Henry Q entering the far turn, but Corrales gave Two Phil's his cue virtually simultaneously. The favorite swept to the lead leaving the three-furlong pole, and took a two-length lead into the stretch. Bishops Bay tried to cling on, but with only moderate urging, Two Phil's shook him off and kept drawing clear. With Corrales high in his irons and not asking for run at all, Two Phil's cruised across the wire stopping the clock in 1:49.60 for the 1 1/8 miles. He was awarded a Beyer Speed Figure of 105, matching the career-best he earned in the Kentucky Derby. Bishops Bay was a best-of-the-rest second by seven lengths over rallying Texas Derby winner Hayes Strike. Lord Miles, making his first start since winning the Grade 2 Wood Memorial in early April, was another 3 1/4 lengths behind that one in fourth He was followed, in order, by Henry Q, Timesatappin, Agnello's Dream, and Last Cookie. Rivelli said that he hoped the Ohio Derby would provide ideal timing and spacing into the summer's major events for 3-year-olds, the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational in July at Monmouth and the Grade 1 Travers Stakes in August at Saratoga. Two Phil's delivered an ideal prep performance on Saturday.
