Karl Broberg won five races Friday in a feat that helped him reach a milestone of 4,000 training wins – and then surpassed it to end the day at 4,001 career victories. Broberg, a 50-year-old native of Chicago, has trained for about 12 years. He saddled his first winner on Nov. 7, 2009 at Retama Park. “I think it goes without saying that it’s the fastest anybody [has] ever done it,” Broberg said of the 4,000 wins, “especially factoring in how much smaller foal crops are now than they were years ago. “It’s a team effort – just never being satisfied, trying to improve whenever we can.” Broberg reached 4,000 wins when Baudette Blizzard won the sixth race at Prairie Meadows. The trainer had horses racing at multiple venues, and the Twitter accounts for both Broberg and Prairie Meadows pointed to the win as the milestone victory. Broberg also won races Friday at Evangeline Downs and Lone Star Park. He had 11 starters among all of the tracks. Overall, the trainer has had 16,521 starts for stable earnings of more than $63.9 million, according to statistics from Daily Racing Form. Baudette Blizzard ($11.20) on Friday stalked the pace in third in the $5,000 conditioned claiming sprint, came three wide into the stretch, and ran down the leader for a head win under Elvin Gonzalez. Broberg also is the owner of Baudette Blizzard, through his stable End Zone Athletics. It was the second win on the card for Broberg. He also had a training double at Evangeline Downs. Broberg led North America in trainer wins for six consecutive years from 2014-2019. In 2018, he became just the third trainer to win 500 or more races in a calendar year, behind Steve Asmussen and Scott Lake. Broberg ranks 13th on the all-time leader board for trainer wins in North America, according to Equibase. His introduction to the sport came as a horseplayer, and he later became owner, then trainer. Broberg is a resident of Arlington, Texas, which is located near Lone Star Park.
