Jimmy Toner is one of many trainers who spend the winter in South Florida and return to New York in the spring. While Toner is again heading south for the winter, he said he will not be returning to New York in 2021. Toner said when he leaves Florida next spring he will be stabled at Fair Hill, a training center in Maryland. One of Toner’s primary owners, AJ Suited Racing, owns a barn at that facility. Toner said part of the reason to be based there is to be closer to his daughter Catherine, who is an immigration attorney in Washington, D.C. Click to learn more. “The economics of this business are getting tougher and tougher,” Toner said. Toner said he first came to New York in 1973, when he trained for Caesar Kimmel. Twenty-five years ago, Toner won the Grade 1 NYRA Mile with Flying Chevron. Since then, Toner has won some of this circuit’s biggest turf races with Memories of Silver, Winter Memories, Soaring Softly, and Wonder Again, all of whom have stakes named for them at NYRA tracks. “It’s been a pretty good run,” Toner said. This year, Toner won only three races on the NYRA circuit including a maiden race with the promising 2-year-old filly Seasons.
