Slew’s Tiz Whiz figures to be a short price as he goes for his fourth straight win at Emerald Downs on Sunday. His latest win came in the $150,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. 14 and he should not have any trouble handling the extra distance in the mile and 70-yard open allowance race, which drew eight horses. The race goes as the eighth on a nine-race card that begins at 2:15 p.m. Trained by Tom Wenzel, Slew’s Tiz Whiz started his winning streak with a 2 1/2-length victory in a first-level allowance race with a $40,000 claiming option June 26. As usual, he settled early in the six-furlong dash before finishing with a rush to win going away. He did the same when he won the $50,000 Governor’s going 6 1/2 furlongs July 24. The 4-year-old Washington-bred gelding by Slew’s Tiznow had a perfect trip winning the richest race at Emerald in the Longacres Mile. Breaking from the rail with Jose Zunino aboard, he saved ground the whole way before closing into a fast pace set by Papa’s Golden Boy. It was his first victory around two turns. The pace will not likely be as fast Sunday, but there should be plenty of speed to set him up and he will be tough to beat if he retains his current form. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Street Boss, Top Executive was the closest pursuer to Papa’s Golden Boy in the Mile and it cost him in the stretch as he came up empty late and had to settle for fourth. Top Executive came from a stalking position to beat Coast Kid and Slew’s Tiz Whiz going 1 1/16 miles in the the $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby last year and should get a similar trip Sunday. He will break from post 4 with Kevin Radke up. The Doris Harwood-trained Five Star General is coming off an unlucky third in the Mile. While Slew’s Tiz Whiz was hugging the rail going around both turns, Five Star General, who broke from post 10 in the 12-horse field, went at least five wide around the first turn and never got near the rail the rest of the way. The 6-year-old Kentucky-bred horse by Distorted Humor made Longacres Mile history by joining Stryker Phd as the only horses to finish in the top three in three consecutive Miles. He was the runner-up in 2020 and third in 2021 when he also had a compromised trip. Five Star General is the only graded stakes winner and the top money earner in the field with $284,563 in the bank. He could be dangerous from a stalking position with Leslie Mawing up. Considering the strong field consists of the best horses on the grounds, the winner will undoubtedly establish a track-record. The first time the mile and 70-yard distance will be contested at Emerald is in a $3,500 starter race Friday night.
