OPELOUSAS, La. – Things could start to look a little different atop the Evangeline Downs jockey ranks beginning this week. The three-time reigning riding champion and co-leader this season Diego Saenz could miss most if not all of the remaining meeting, which concludes Aug. 30, due to a knee injury sustained in a one-horse incident last Thursday. Saenz was aboard Hang On in the evening’s second race, when his mount clipped a rival’s heels entering the stretch. Hang On stumbled badly, unseating Saenz. Saenz lay on the track for several minutes while being attended to by medical personnel. Hang On was not injured. “Initially, the ER doctor said strained ligaments and two to three weeks,” said Louis Coco, Saenz’s agent. “But Diego went to his orthopedic doctor [Tuesday] to get an MRI. Unfortunately, his knee was still too swollen, so they will have to wait until next week. It looks like it is going to be longer than a couple of weeks. A good option for us might be just to take the rest of the meeting off. That way we can get healthy for the Delta meet that starts in October.” In addition to his Evangeline riding titles in recent years, Saenz, 35, was the leading jockey at the Delta Downs meeting that concluded in March. Saenz’s injury opens the door for Colby Hernandez, who is tied with Saenz at 72 wins heading into this week. Hernandez finished second to Saenz each of the last two seasons. Coco said that Gerard Melancon, whom he also represents, likely will see an increase in business.
