LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Kenny McPeek holds the Kentucky Oaks in high regard, and he finally won the treasured prize last year with champion Thorpedo Anna after being second three times. He's now started the road to the 2026 Kentucky Oaks off in strong style, as his trainee Taken by the Wind powered clear to a 5 1/4-length win in the Grade 3, $300,000 Pocahontas Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs, the first points race toward next spring's filly classic.  This was a record fifth win in the Pocahontas for McPeek, who was not present at Churchill on Saturday. He previously saddled winners Dothraki Queen (2015), Daddys Lil Darling (2016), Fun and Feisty (2022), and V V’s Dream (2023). The Pocahontas awards its top five finishers points toward the 2026 Oaks on the 10-5-3-2-1 scale. The race is also part of the Breeders’ Cup’s “Dirt Dozen” program, with the top three finishers earning a tiered bonus bankroll that can be used toward pre-entry and entry fees for the Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. Florida-bred Taken by the Wind ($14.10), owned by the McPeek family's Magdalena Racing, Terry Bradshaw, and Graham Leveston, was a maiden-optional claiming winner going seven furlongs on Aug. 21 at Saratoga, in a race taken off the turf after originally being carded for two turns. The filly by freshman sire Rock Your World was adding distance to a mile, but stayed around one turn.  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Our Two Girls closely stalked pacesetter Embrace the Moment, and came even to her into the stretch; Dazzling Dame, last-out winner of the Sorority Stakes at a two-turn mile, was revving up on their outside. Taken by the Wind and and Irad Ortiz Jr. - who joins the Kentucky riding colony this fall - were in behind those three. As Embrace the Moment faded, Taken by the Wind went to split Our Two Girls, on the inside, and Dazzling Dame. She appeared to briefly put her stablemate in right for a few strides approaching the furlong grounds, but was in the process of striking the lead, and drew clear comfortably in the final stages.  "It felt great all the way to the wire," Ortiz said of the added distance. "She was very straightforward and very kind. She's an exciting filly."  The final time was 1:36.50.  Miss Complicated, sent away as the favorite, was bumped between horses at the start and brushed lightly with a foe while trying to move on the turn. She made a belated rally to be second, essentially hand-ridden under the wire while easily best of the rest. It was 2 1/2 lengths to Joke Maker in third.  Dazzling Dame, Our Two Girls, and Embrace the Moment followed; Starlit Sky, a step slow after being bumped at the break in the same skirmish as Miss Complicated, trailed throughout.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
