Jockey Kirk LeBlanc underwent successful surgery Monday to repair a broken left arm and broken right thumb suffered when he was unseated from his mount in the seventh race July 23. Doctors used a plate and screws in LeBlanc’s arm and inserted pins into his thumb, according to close friend and fellow rider Gerard Melancon. LeBlanc, who was fifth in the jockey standings before the injury, joins the three-time defending riding champ Diego Saenz on the sidelines. Saenz injured his left knee in an incident three weeks ago. Both are expected to miss the remainder of the season, which concludes Aug. 30, but each is hopeful to be back for the Delta Downs season, which starts Oct. 15. “Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game,” said LeBlanc’s agent, Anthony Martin. “Hopefully the doctor’s estimate of six to eight weeks is accurate, and we can be back by the start of the Delta meet.” Colby Hernandez, whom Martin also represents, inherited the title of leading rider after Saenz’s accident. Hernandez has finished second to Saenz the last two seasons.
