ARCADIA, Calif. -- Superstition was fourth in her stakes debut after a rough start in the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 9, only to be promoted to third when a rival was disqualified for causing interference. A clean trip in Monday’s $81,600 Wishing Well Stakes led to a much better result for Superstition, a highly regarded 4-year-old filly. Ridden by Flavien Prat, Superstition ($11.80) closed from third in a field of seven to take the lead in early stretch, drawing away to win by 1 1/2 lengths over 8-5 Oleksandra. Contantia, a 16-1 outsider, finished third, followed by Guitty, Lighthouse, So Much Happy, and Aqua Seaform Shame. The Wishing Well Stakes was restricted to fillies and mares who had not won a graded stakes since July 1. :: Click to learn about our DRF's Free Past Performance program. Superstition ran 6 1/2 furlongs on turf in 1:14.22 and it was the second of three wins on the eight-race card for Prat, the leading rider at the winter-spring meeting. Prat has been aboard Superstition for all seven of her starts for owners Perry and Ramona Bass and trainer Richard Mandella. “I thought she had the talent,” Prat said. “I was disappointed last time. This time, she put it all together.” Oleksandra, the winner of the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes against males at Belmont Park last June, was last early. Oleksandra was closing with interest on the turn when she propped while racing clear of other runners. Oleksandra recovered under jockey Joel Rosario to finish well. Rosario speculated that Oleksandra lost her footing. “We lost a little momentum,” he said. Superstition, by Ghostzapper, was purchased for $850,000 as a yearling in 2018. She has won 3 of 7 starts and earned $153,180. Superstition is a full-sister to Gloryzapper, who won the Grade 3 L.A. Woman Stakes for filly and mare sprinters on dirt at Santa Anita in October 2016.
