Suddenbreakingnews split horses late for a half-length win over Cash Bonus in Friday night's $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes for 2-year-olds at Remington Park. Donnie Von Hemel, who trains the winner, also trained the race's namesake, a Grade 1 winner who accounted for the inaugural Remington Park Derby in 1989. Clever Trevor, who is now 29, resides on Von Hemel’s farm in Piedmont, Okla., about a half-hour drive from Remington. Suddenbreakingnews ($10.80) was cutting back from two turns for the Clever Trevor and was next to last early as Valid Decision and Bravura dueled through a half-mile in 44.59 seconds. Suddenbreakingnews rallied through the stretch to cover the seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:24.01. “I knew he would be running late but really didn’t know if he could get there in time,” Von Hemel said. “The half-mile split worked to his favor.” Luis Quinonez was aboard Suddenbreakingnews for Samuel F. Henderson. Suddenbreakingnews is a son of Mineshaft. The Clever Trevor is expected to produce starters for next month's $250,000 Springboard Mile at Remington Park.
