ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The speedy Maximum Fifty takes a three-race winning streak into Saturday’s featured 10th race at Woodbine and should be favored in a six-horse field that also includes the unbeaten 3-year-old Going Lucky. Maximum Fifty won three in a row early in her career for trainer Robert Tiller, who lost her for $32,000 when her current roll began July 19. Trainer Marty Drexler sent her out to land another first-level allowance with a $32,000 claiming option Sept. 21. She prevailed at the same level in another six-furlong Tapeta sprint Oct. 11, earning a career-high 80 Beyer Speed Figure while Tiller re-claimed her for owner Frank DiGiulio Jr. Maximum Fifty moves up to conditioned allowance/$50,000 optional-claiming company going six furlongs on Saturday under Daisuke Fukumoto, who was aboard for five of her victories. Going Lucky won her Sept. 4 opener against Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens from a stalking position. A subsequent allowance for her here failed to fill, so trainer Katerina Vassilieva shipped her to Presque Isle Downs on Oct. 8, when she cleared the first allowance condition in front-running style with a 79 Beyer. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. “She arrived at our barn in May and went through the paces seemingly unassuming,” Vassilieva recalled. “She didn’t blow anybody away with super-speedy works, but she always had a good attitude toward training and a maturity about her, which I think says a lot about a young racehorse. I felt like there was untapped potential there.” Vassilieva said the almost white daughter of Lookin At Lucky had her debut delayed due to illness. “We had to pump the brakes a bit during the summer and back off her training because she was dealing with a viral infection,” Vassilieva explained. “She didn’t breeze for about five weeks because her blood work wasn’t great, and we wanted to give her time to recover and feel 100 percent again.” Leading rider Rafael Hernandez takes over on Going Lucky, who is owned George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stable. The popular Luz de La Luna was re-claimed by trainer David Borsk for $50,000 twice this year. After taking her back in August, Borsk sent her out to finish second and then first at this level, winning from farther off the pace than usual while upsetting the heavily-favored Shifty on Oct. 18. Biles could be caught between a rock and a hard place. The need-the-lead type may not be quite as fast as Maximum Fifty. Expect her to take up the chase in second before tiring. Canadian Sweetheart and May May Strong complete the lineup. Canadian Sweetheart is starting for the first time in more than a year. The 5-year-old has gone winless in seven outings since capturing the 2023 Sweet Briar Too Stakes. Post time for the 11-race program on Breeders’ Cup Saturday has been moved up to 12:50 p.m. to best align the card in the simulcast market. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
