SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Joseph O’Brien, a son of Aidan O’Brien, made quite an impression with his first starter at Saratoga when State of Rest pulled a 21-1 upset in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Saratoga Derby Invitational. State of Rest, with only one win from seven starts coming in, rallied from sixth position under John Velazquez to win by a length. He earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure. “Little bit surprised to win in the manner that he did, but we came here thinking we had a live shot of running in the money,” O’Brien said. “Probably overlooked because he had one start this season, but he ran really good, met a lot of traffic. We thought step up in distance would really suit him.” O’Brien, who was staying in town for a few days to attend the yearling sales here, said State of Rest would return to his yard in Ireland by the end of the week, but would be under consideration to return for the $1 million Jockey Club Derby at Belmont on Sept. 18. O’Brien said that if not State of Rest, perhaps another of his 3-year-olds would participate in that 1 1/2-mile race. “It’s definitely a race we have on our radar,” he said. Meanwhile, Messidor could only manage a seventh-place finish for O’Brien in Sunday’s Saratoga Oaks. O’Brien said the 1 3/16-mile distance was just too far for Messidor. “She’s better at a mile,” O’Brien said.
