ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Starship Jubilee ($6.40) broke on top and never looked back, romping in the Grade 2, $253,500 Canadian Stakes for the second year in a row under jockey Luis Contreras on Saturday afternoon at Woodbine. Starship Jubilee assumed control of the race out of the gate, and went on to set a slow early pace with Dixie Moon tracking her in second. The favored Competitionofideas raced in midpack early on and made a middle move to get in position heading into the far turn, but Starship Jubilee was too much for her rivals on the day, pulling away in the stretch to win by 4 1/4 lengths over English shipper Magnetic Charm. Competitionofideas was third, while Holy Helena was fourth. The final time was 1:45.84 over an about distance of 1 1/8 miles on the E. P. Taylor turf course. Starship Jubilee’s victory in the Canadian was her second win of the season, and she’s hit the board in all five starts this year. She won the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf at Gulfstream Park in January, before recording back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Grade 2 Nassau Stakes and Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes at Woodbine. Most recently, she was third in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 24. “She’s been consistent all year,” winning trainer Kevin Attard said. “I think the mile and an eighth hits her squarely in between the eyes. Today, there wasn’t any pace and I figured if they were going to let us have the lead then we would take it. She came off a great race at Saratoga. I thought she ran really well. She came back to work well in the interim and she put it all together.” With the win, Starship Jubilee improved her career record to 13 wins from 30 starts, and she banked the $150,000 winner’s share, which puts her over $1 million in career earnings. She captured last year’s edition of the Canadian Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths.
