ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Dale Desruisseaux’s star 2-year-old fillies will go their separate ways Saturday at Woodbine when Dixie Law takes on the boys in the $250,000 Coronation Futurity and Piper’s Gift meets Canadian-bred fillies in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Both should be favored under Rafael Hernandez. Dixie Law has won 3 of 4 starts, including the Cup and Saucer Stakes against Canadian-bred males on the grass Oct. 5. The daughter of Tiz the Law is coming off a daylight score going 1 1/16 miles in her first Tapeta start in the Grade 3 Mazarine. Desruisseaux felt that it made sense to stretch Dixie Law out to 1 1/8 miles in the Coronation rather than run her in the 1 1/16-mile Princess Elizabeth. “She’s already beaten the boys, and I think a mile and an eighth is going to suit her as well,” Desruisseaux explained. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! With the addition of Lasix, Piper’s Gift graduated in her third start and first Tapeta race by eight lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight on Sept. 20. She doubled up by 5 1/2 lengths in the Oct. 12 Glorious Song, an open seven-furlong stakes, for which she got her second straight Beyer Speed Figure of 79. Desruisseaux is optimistic that Piper’s Gift, a keen daughter of Yorkton, will race effectively around two turns. “Lasix has obviously improved her a lot,” Desruisseaux said. “I think it also helps her to relax a little bit, too. The way she did it last time, I think she’ll be all right.” Dixie Law and Piper’s Gift breezed five furlongs together in a bullet 1:00 on Nov. 19. “The work went well,” Desruisseaux said. “Dixie galloped out a little bit better than Piper did. Piper was a little bit strong going to the pole.” Among the other eight Canadian-breds in the Coronation are Navy Street and Speights Will. Navy Street won his five-furlong debut in September and then set a dawdling pace in the seven-furlong Display Stakes before weakening to second. His connections bypassed last Sunday’s six-furlong Clarendon Stakes with the belief that he wants to go longer. The runner-up in the Aug. 24 Simcoe Stakes for yearling sales graduates, Speights Will won a seven-furlong maiden special weight in late September before a flat fourth in the Oct. 12 Display. His lone two-turn try was a wide seventh in a one-mile maiden special weight on turf under Ryan Munger in September. “He ran long once on the grass,” trainer Steve Chircop said. “Ryan said he was having a hard time on the inner turf. I’m sure he’ll get the [Coronation] distance. He’s bred for it, and he trains like it.” The Princess Elizabeth drew a field of eight that also includes Katie’s Grace and Bells of Paradise. After a sluggish start, Katie’s Grace rallied wide from off a slow pace for third in the Mazarine, her first race after a debut victory. Bells of Paradise won her six-furlong opener on Nov. 1 over Bossy Candy, who came right back to take the restricted Shady Well Stakes. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
