Spun to Run has gotten better and better during his 3-year-old season year for trainer Carlos Guerrero, and on Saturday at Parx Racing the colt turned in a strong performance to easily beat older rivals in the $100,000 Michael P. Ballezzi Mile. With Mychel Sanchez in the saddle, Spun to Run broke sharply and went to the lead. He relinquished command on the first turn and settled into second position after the Panamanian import Carlos L. rushed up inside him. When Sanchez gave Spun to Run his cue nearing the far turn, he shot to the lead outside 3-1 Carlos L. and opened up a sizable advantage. Sanchez had Spun to Run in hand for much of the stretch drive and he scored by 6 3/4 lengths. Spun to Run paid $4.40 in the nine-horse field. He was timed in 1:37.65 following spits of 24.21 seconds, 47.76, 1:11.90, and 1:24.44. Someday Jones, who raced in third position early, finished a clear second despite drifting outward in the stretch. It was four lengths back to Forewarned in third. Spun to Run improved his record to 4-1-3 from 10 starts. He won the Grade 3 Smarty Jones at his home base of Parx in early September, a race after finishing third to Maximum Security in the Haskell Invitational. In his start prior to the Ballezzi Mile, he finished fifth, beaten 1 1/2 lengths, in the Pennsylvania Derby. A son of Hard Spun, Spun to Run, was purchased by his owner, Robert Donaldson, for $64,000 at the May 2018 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale in Timonium, Md. He has now earned $460,250.
