HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Life after Maxfield, who closed his outstanding career with a victory in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap last month at Churchill Downs, will not be easy for trainer Brendan Walsh. But it will go on for Walsh, who on Saturday sends out his first two stakes runners of the local season, including the Grade 1-caliber Space Traveller in the Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale. The Fort Lauderdale is the richest of five stakes on Saturday’s card and a key prep for the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf on Jan. 29. Space Traveller looms among the key contenders in the 1 1/16-mile Fort Lauderdale coming off a series of Grade 1 races since he joined Walsh’s barn this past summer. Space Traveller’s career in Europe was highlighted by his victory in the Group 2 Solonoway Stakes in Ireland in September 2019. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Space Traveller came to the United States for the first time later that season and finished eighth behind Uni in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. He has been competitive in all three starts for Walsh, finishing fourth in the Mister D. (formerly the Arlington Million), second in the Woodbine Mile, and fifth in the Keeneland Turf Mile in his most recent start Oct. 9. “We stopped on him after Keeneland with this race pretty much in mind for his next start,” Walsh said. “We threw a lot at him pretty quick, and I thought he took it well. He ran three very good races. He was never beaten more than about three lengths in any of them. We got him down to Florida early, and he’s been working great. He seems to be doing really good going into this race. I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but if things were to go well Saturday we’d have to consider a race like the Pegasus.” Walsh, who’ll also send out the 3-year-old stakes-placed Keeper of Time in Saturday’s Grade 3 Suwannee River for fillies and mares, said he visited Maxfield in Kentucky on Tuesday. “He looks great,” Walsh said. “Horses like him, you’re always going to miss them. We have a full barn here at Palm Meadows, including a bunch of late-developing 2-year-olds again this season. Hopefully, we’ll have another good 3-year-old jump up for us this winter like Prevalence did last year.” The field for the Fort Lauderdale also is expected to include Doswell and Breaking the Rules, who finished noses apart while second and third in this race a year ago, Atone, English Bee, King Guillermo, L’Imperatore, Media Blitz, Order and Law, Renaissance Frolic, and Sole Volante. :: Join DRF Bets and play the races with a $250 First Deposit Bonus. Only 10 horses were nominated to the Harlan’s Holiday, with a short field expected to be headed by Fearless, South Bend, and local favorite Eye of the Jedi. The other stakes on Saturday are the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl for fillies and mares going six furlongs and the Rampart Stakes for fillies and mares at one mile. ◗ Life Is Good, who is being pointed to the Pegasus World Cup, worked an easy half-mile on Friday at the Palm Beach Downs training center. Life Is Good went in 50.24 seconds, finishing strong, galloping out with good energy, and easing up after five furlongs in 1:03.32, according to Daily Racing Form clocker Dave Norton. Winner of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, Life Is Good will face Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Knicks Go in the Pegasus. ◗ Paco Lopez, who posted a dozen victories to lead the jockey standings after the first two weeks of the Championship meet, began serving a three-day riding suspension Wednesday. He is scheduled to return to action Saturday.
