OCEANPORT, N.J. – Circumstances have combined to make South Andros a top contender Saturday in the $75,000 Lighthouse Stakes for fillies and mares at Monmouth Park. South Andros has the rail against six rivals in the 1 1/16-mile race on the main track. The gray 4-year-old, trained by Rodney Jenkins, posted her maiden win on grass at Colonial Downs last June. She ran seven more times on turf in first-level allowances to close out the campaign, rallying to hit the board five more times. Jenkins had every intention of keeping her on grass in 2014. But then, those circumstances intervened. He entered her in four turf races this year, only to have three rained off onto the main track. South Andros won all three, posting improving Beyer Speed Figures with each victory. She seems to be sending a signal that dirt, rather than grass, might be her game. Her one effort on turf this season was her poorest, a fourth-place finish in an allowance race at Pimlico. “That was a puzzlement to me,” Jenkins said. “She had run some nice races on the grass, but she just seems to be a hair better on the dirt. She’s out of a mare [Misty Rain, by Rubiano] that has mostly grass influences. But it’s working for us now, and I didn’t want to change it.” It certainly worked last time out in the off-the-turf Justakiss Stakes at Delaware Park on June 5. Racing much closer to the pace than usual, South Andros kicked home strongly in the final stages for a one-length victory and a career-best 87 Beyer. “She moved a little early in that race,” Jenkins said. “I thought she was hanging at the head of the lane. When he [Xavier Perez] got after her, she just went on. She always gets out a little bit, but that’s her nature.” Perez has the return call for the Lighthouse. Paco Lopez, the runaway leader in the local rider standings, picks up the mount on Firenze Feeling for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. Firenze Feeling was third to Made Up, who also is in this race, most recently in a third-level Pimlico allowance. Majestic River hasn’t lived up to the expectations that come with being a $425,000 yearling purchase. She is moving in the right direction, if a 7 1/4-length allowance win here last month is an indicator.
