DEL MAR, Calif. - Micro Share fought past a stubborn longshot in Yuki to win her first stakes in Monday’s $105,400 Tranquility Lake Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar, recording her third consecutive win. Ridden by Mike Smith, Micro Share’s $8.60 win was a minor upset. Fun to Dream, the 3-10 favorite, could only manage third, failing to pose a threat in the stretch. Smith swept the two minor stakes on Monday’s 11-race program. He won the Generous Portion Stakes for 2-year-old statebred fillies on Crazy Hot ($3.80). Micro Share tracked Yuki through a quick pace of 22.39 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46 for a half-mile. Yuki led by as many as five lengths early, a margin that was gone at the end of the backstretch. “We wanted to stay close,” Smith said. Smith moved Micro Share into contention nearing the turn. Smith, the 58-year-old Hall of Famer, said in the winner’s circle that Micro Share is a different filly at 4 than she was last year. “I’m getting to know her and I’ve learned she has a long run,” he said. “Last year, she was all legs. This year, she’s getting it all together and she’s grown into herself.” Generous Portion Stakes Crazy Hot led throughout the $125,000 Generous Portion Stakes to win for the second time in her four-race career. Starting from the rail, Crazy Hot ducked to the inside, but recovered quickly to reach the front on the backstretch, leading by two lengths. She followed with consecutive third-place finishes in the Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes at Santa Anita in June and the CTBA Stakes here on Aug. 6. Smith rode Crazy Hot for the first time on Monday. The race was delayed approximately 15 minutes after a mishap with a tractor left uneven harrow marks in the stretch, requiring additional attention to smooth the surface. After the delay, Unified A. P. became upset in the gate and was scratched. She was 35-1 when she was withdrawn. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
