Smarmy put on a strong stretch drive along the rail through the stretch to get up by a head over the odds-on favorite Catlaunch in the $75,000 Governor's Buckeye Cup Stakes at Thistledown on Saturday afternoon. Key Low finished a half-length farther back to be third in the field of 10 Ohio-bred older horses going 1 1/4 miles. Smarmy had won this race last year in similiar fashion, and had not won a stake since. Key Low, who was claimed for $4,000 three races ago, opened a long lead and had a 3 1/2-length advantage at the eighth pole. Smarmy is owned by his breeders, Bruce Ryan and Blazing Meadows Farm, and is trained by Tim Hamm. He got the 10 furlongs in 2:07.14 over the fast strip and returned $15.20. He was ridden by Oswaldo Pereirea.
