HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The Harlan’s Holiday and Fort Lauderdale, both Grade 3 stakes, traditionally serve as the final local preps for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup and $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf. That will be the case again Saturday when such noteworthy runners as Skippylongstockinging, Major Dude, and Cugino look to enhance their status heading into the rich Pegasus Day program on Jan. 24. The Harlan’s Holiday and Fort Lauderdale highlight an outstanding 11-race card on Saturday that also includes the Suwannee River, a prep for the $500,000 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf; the Janus, featuring a rematch between Reef Runner and last year’s winner, Coppola; and the Sugar Swirl for female sprinters. The 1 1/16-mle Harlan’s Holiday lost some luster when trainer Brad Cox opted to use an allowance 24 hours earlier as a potential Pegasus World Cup prep for Florida Derby winner Tappan Street. That leaves a field of just seven in the Harlan’s Holiday, topped by Skippylongstocking, who won the event in 2022. He must prove he deserves the opportunity to compete in the Pegasus World Cup for a record fourth time after being eased to the wire nearly 40 lengths behind the winner as the tepid favorite in his last start in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic on Aug. 22. The Fort Lauderdale came up the stronger of the day’s co-features, with Major Dude looking to defend his title and the vastly improved Cugino likely to give him his stiffest challenge exiting a very game victory in the Grade 2 Red Smith at Aqueduct on Nov. 2. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence!
