LEXINGTON, Ky. –  As Sistercharlie surged to the lead in midstretch of the Grade 1, $350,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland it seemed nothing could overshadow her stellar performance. And then, something did. She still won going away by 2 1/4 lengths, but the results of the scramble of fillies behind her for secondary prizes shined the spotlight on her trainer, Chad Brown, who swept the race trifecta when Fourstar Crook and Off Limits rallied to be second and third, respectively. And like that, a race that seemed so contentious had turned into a sweep. It was a noteworthy achievement for Brown, the Eclipse Award-winning trainer the past two years, particularly in light of Sistercharlie not having raced since a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks last June. “After her race last year she got really sick on us,” he said. “We have a great team of veterinarians that worked on her. She had a lung infection that turned real bad. We rested her and (owner) Peter Brant was very, very patient to give her all that time. My staff did a tremendous job bringing her back after such a lengthy layoff.” The top-three finish from Brown trainees came despite those immediately behind them appearing to run their best. Fourth-place La Coronel was racing over a Keeneland course where she had been unbeaten in three prior starts, and fifth-place Dona Bruja, the 5-2 favorite, raced uncontested on the lead with moderate splits of 47.76 seconds and 1:12.14. It didn’t matter. None could keep up with the Brown trainees, especially Sistercharlie, who had saved ground before exploding down the lane under John Velazquez. She completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.41 over a firm turf course that had received intermittent rain over the afternoon. The victory gave Velazquez his 50th stakes winner at Keeneland. “I’m blessed to ride for a lot of good trainers with a lot of good horses,” he said of the accomplishment. A 4-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie, Sistercharlie notched her first Grade 1 win in the Jenny Wiley after being Group 1-placed as a 3-year-old in France earlier in her career. She improved her record to 3 for 6 and increased her earnings to $717,294, paying $8.80 as the second favorite in the field of 11. Sistercharlie was given a Beyer Speed Figure of 103. Brown won the Jenny Wiley for the second time following a victory from Ball Dancing in 2015.
