Talk about a blanket finish. Sf Hot Pass edged Eye N Capo by a nose to win the Grade 1, $266,250 Bank of America Challenge Championship on Saturday night at the Downs at Albuquerque, while it was another nose back to Jess My Kiss in third. Pirate Coves Hero, who was fourth, was a neck behind Jess My Kiss. The Challenge Championship, at 440 yards, was the richest of five graded stakes that made up the American Quarter Horse Association’s 27th annual Challenge Championships. The traveling series of races was showcased on a 10-race card of stakes and it was being run for the first time at Albuquerque, which also will host the event in 2020. Sf Hot Pass ($6.80) and favorite Eye N Capo were prominent throughout, with the eventual winner covering the distance on a track rated fast in 21.60 seconds. Francisco Calderon was aboard for Shannon Fisher and trainer Leon Bard. Sf Hot Pass was picking up the 10thwin of his career from 21 starts, and the first-place check of $122,475 improved his career earnings to $275,699. He also earned a provisional berth into the Grade 1, $600,000 Champion of Champions on Dec. 14 at Los Alamitos. Sf Hot Pass came into the Challenge Championship off a Texas-bred stakes win Oct. 4 at Lone Star Park. He is a son of Ivory James. Valiant Tiberias dominates Derby Valiant Tiberias ($4) was a dominant winner of the Grade 3, $154,750 Derby Challenge Championship, leading throughout for a 1 1/2-length win over Charles Fury. The winner covered 400 yards in 19.38 seconds. Jockey James Flores was aboard for trainer Rick Armendariz.  Valiant Tiberias is a son of Valiant Hero who races for Sergio Holguin, Cliften Nielsen, and Feix Rodriguez. Valiant Tiberias became the fifth next-out winner to emerge from the Grade 1, $1.5 million All American Derby run Sept. 1 at Ruidoso Downs.   ► Preyn Onthe Mountain ($24.20) was the longest-priced winner of the Challenge Championships, when she held for a three-quarter-length victory over Weetonas Lafawn in the Grade 1, $106,500 Distaff. She covered 400 yards in 19.62 seconds. Jimmy Brooks was aboard for Stetson Hurlbert. Eddie Willis trains Preyn Onthe Mountain, who was his second Challenge Championships winner on the night behind Jay Number 7 in the Juvenile. Preyn Onthe Mountain is a daughter of Ivory James. ► Jay Number 7 ($4.20) won the sixth race of his young career in the Grade 2, $130,625 Juvenile when he held for a head victory over the rolling Rrelentless. Jay Number 7 covered 350 yards in 17.51 seconds. Jose Vega was aboard for Dustin Cox and Willis. The race was the ninth lifetime start for the Oklahoma-based Jay Number 7, who is a son of Im a Fancy Pyc. ► Let There Be Sound ($6) overcame post 7 to win his fourth straight race in the Grade 1, $104,500 Distance Challenge Championship, covering 870 yards in 44.71 seconds. Let There Be Sound easily moved to the lead after the break and won by three-quarters of a length over Ms Esther. Stormy Smith rode the winner for Louis Howard and Corrine Howard and trainer John Stinebaugh. Let There Be Sound is by One Famous Eagle. ► An all-stakes pick four on races 7-10 paid $207.45. The winning numbers were 9-10-5-4. ► Albuquerque reported attendance ontrack was 8,979 on Saturday night. Handle on the program was $447,821. ► Racing resumes at Albuquerque on July 17, 2020, with the date for next year’s Challenge Championships set for Oct. 24.
