SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Friday’s $125,000 Union Avenue Stakes at Saratoga was supposed to rematch Kant Hurry Love and Leeloo, the one-two finishers from the $125,000 Dancin Renee Stakes at Aqueduct on June 23. But Kant Hurry Love will have to scratch, leaving Leeloo as a likely prohibitive favorite in the six-furlong race for New York-bred fillies and mares. Trainer David Duggan said Wednesday that Kant Hurry Love came out of her last breeze on Friday with an issue. “After the breeze, it looked [like] she wasn’t right. It appears to be a foot,” Duggan said. “It doesn’t seem to be anything major but the timing is absolutely miserable.” Ignacio “Nacho” Correas, trainer of Leeloo, was looking forward to a rematch with Kant Hurry Love, believing Leeloo could flip the script from the Dancin Renee. “I don’t think I had the best trip,” Correas said before learning of Kant Hurry Love’s defection. “With a good trip I might turn it around.” There is heavy rain in the forecast for Friday. If the card is run, it is likely to be run over a wet track. “That won’t be a problem if we got a wet track,” Correas said. :: Gain a competitive edge at Saratoga with DRF's premier handicapping data — purchase our meet packages today and bet with confidence. Security Code was fifth in the Dancin Renee but is returning to a track over which she has two wins and two seconds from four starts. Security Code won a maiden race here in September 2022 and a New York-bred second-level allowance on Sept. 1 of last year. “Security Code is doing great, Security Code loves Saratoga, Security Code likes a wet track. I don’t know that she loves a wet track,” trainer Phil Serpe said. Earlier this year, Security Code won the Broadway Stakes at Aqueduct over a track listed good. She has proven to be most effective when she gets involved early in a race, something she did not do in the Dancin Renee. Serpe will also be the trainer of record for Cousin Kristi, who has done all of her training for this in South Florida with Cam Gambolati. She is coming off a runner-up finish behind Bluefield in the Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream Park on June 29. Serpe said Cousin Kristi has been in his barn for only a week but the plan is for her to stay in New York moving forward. Cara’s Time, trained by Mitch Friedman, came off a four-month layoff to win a second-level statebred allowance on June 15. Most recently, she finished third in a first-level allowance race here on July 19. Early Edition, shipping in from Parx for Stacy McMullin, and Captains Daughter, shipping in from Monmouth Park for Russell Cash, complete the field. Evan Shipman likely down to four-horse field Six were entered but likely only four will run in the $125,000 Evan Shipman Stakes at a mile. Drake’s Passage, who finished last in an allowance race last Sunday and Sheriff Bianco, who finished fourth in Thursday’s John Morrissey Stakes, are both expected to scratch. That could leave Donegal Surges in a good spot to get his first stakes win. A son of Candy Ride trained by Todd Pletcher for Donegal Racing, Donegal Surges finished third in the six-furlong Affirmed Success Stakes at Aqueduct in May and second to Drake’s Passage in the Commentator at 1 1/8 miles on June 9. “I think he’s a pretty versatile horse, he can handle multiple distances,” Pletcher said. “I think the mile suits him well.” In the Commentator, Pletcher felt his horse was simply “second best.” :: Get Saratoga Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. The horse was purchased privately after his last race in May, a front-running 5 1/4-length victory in a second-level open-company allowance. Bank Frenzy, previously trained by Lisa Lewis, has two wins and two seconds in four starts against restricted company. Whittington Park, a well-beaten third in the Commentator, won the Haynesfield going a mile at Aqueduct in February, earning a career-best 99 Beyer Speed Figure. He has yet to duplicate that performance in three subsequent starts. Maker’s Candy, a two-time New York-bred stakes winner, is coming off a third in the off-the-turf Kingston Stakes here in June. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
