The Washington Cup races for 2-year-olds share the spotlight Sunday at Emerald Downs. First up in race 6 is the colts and geldings division, where Runnin Out of Days will be a short price in the 6 1/2-furlong dash that drew seven horses. Miss Dynamic is the one to beat in the fillies division, which drew nine horses and goes as race 7. Both races are worth $50,000, will be contested over 6 1/2 furlongs, and are restricted to horses bred in Washington or by a sire who stood in Washington in 2019.Runnin Out of Days made short work of his seven rivals when he debuted in the $50,000 King County Express for trainer Blaine Wright on July 10. Despite being a first-time starter breaking from the rail, the son of Abraaj was sent off as the 2-1 second choice in the wagering in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint. With Juan Gutierrez aboard, Runnin Out of Days broke alertly, took over the lead soon after the start, and never looked back while widening his margin at every call to win decisively by more than 10 lengths. The King County turned into a key race when third finisher It’s Turbo came back to win the $50,000 WTBOA Lads, and Gold Rush Junior, fourth, easily won a maiden special weight race on July 31.Gutierrez must have known he had plenty of power under him when he started to look back to his overmatched rivals on the turn. It was an impressive performance, and it is easy to imagine Runnin Out of Days taking a step forward with a race behind him. He will break from the rail with Gutierrez up. Chuckanut Bay was making his first start at Emerald for leading trainer Jorge Rosales when he finished second in the WTBOA Lads on Aug. 7. Gold Rush Junior, who was making his debut in the King County for trainer Candi Cryderman, took a big step forward in his 4 1/2-length victory going five furlongs on July 31.Miss Dynamic, trained by Rigoberto Velasquez, will try to make amends for her loss as the heavy favorite in the $55,000 Barbara Shinpoch on Aug. 7. In her first two starts, with Gutierrez riding, Miss Dynamic broke like a rocket and was never challenged while winning a $15,000 maiden claimer on July 2 and the $60,000 Angie C on July 10. She broke inward from the outside post and bumped with Grazed n’ Confused in the Shinpoch, and after dueling with the winner, Aloha Breeze, she tired to finish third in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint. A daughter of Dynamic Impact, Miss Dynamic could take some catching if she breaks as well as she did in her first two starts when she breaks from post 3 with Gutierrez up. Driveway was making her second start when she rallied from well back after breaking a step slow from the rail to finish second in the Shinpoch for trainer Jose Navarro. Driveway was a front-running winner of a $25,000 maiden claimer for trainer Kay Cooper in her debut. Navarro was acting on behalf of Joe Burke when he claimed the daughter of Cross Traffic out of her winning race.
