ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Rapid Test stole the show in Sunday’s $100,000 Overskate at Woodbine while giving jockey Austin Adams a sweep of the two weekend stakes for older Ontario-sired runners at Woodbine. The 7 1/2-furlong inner turf event looked like a showdown between Cruden Bay and odds-on favorite Awesome Bourbon, who failed to show his customary speed after getting away slowly. Hunt Master, last year’s front-running Overskate victor, went straight to the lead and set a slow pace before Rapid Test made a two-wide bid from mid-pack to press him on the far turn. Rapid Test wore Hunt Master down in the last sixteenth and got home on top by a half-length, in a time of 1:30.18 over a course labeled as good. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Society’s Thunder rallied outside for third and was followed by Cruden Bay, Awesome Bourbon, and No More Options. “I knew there was going to be speed in the race,” said Adams, who won Saturday’s Eternal Search Stakes on Little Teddy. “My plan was to break good. I didn’t want to be too far back and try to save as much ground as I could. I wanted to get the jump on Awesome Bourbon. That was kind of the plan. It worked out perfectly.” Rapid Test ($19.40) was making his second start off an extended layoff after ending up second to Awesome Bourbon in a Sept. 28 conditioned allowance/optional claimer. He was scratched from such a race that was taken off the turf last Sunday. “He had a few setbacks early on in the season, and we actually sent him to the farm,” winning trainer Catherine Day Phillips said. “He hung out with Todd, my husband, for a month. We brought him back very carefully and he hasn’t put foot wrong since.” A son of the late Souper Speedy, Rapid Test earned $60,000 for the partnership of Kingfield Racing Stable and Apricot Valley Thoroughbreds. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
