ARCADIA, Calif. - Law Abidin Citizen closed from fourth in the stretch to win Sunday’s Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita, a race marred by a two-horse spill in early stretch in which Arms Runner sustained a fatal injury. Arms Runner injured his right foreleg and fell, causing a trailing horse, La Sardane, to fall. La Sardane was quickly on her feet. Arms Runner, who won the Desert Code Stakes in 2017, was tended to by track veterinarians and vanned off. He was euthanized, according to track stewards. The spill occurred as the field ran across the main track through the transition from the hillside turf course to the main turf course. The injury occurred on the third day of racing after the track closed on March 3 to inspect and renovate the main track following a series of equine fatalities since late December. Arms Runner is the 23rd horse lost since the meet opened on Dec. 26. La Sardane, a three-time stakes winner in France and New York, was reported as “bruised” in the spill by trainer Neil Drysdale, but otherwise did not suffer any apparent injuries. The 5-year-old mare was ridden by Ruben Fuentes, who was off the remainder of his mounts. Law Abidin Citizen ($15.80) was timed in 1:11.21, finishing a length in front of 9-1 Cistron. Mesut, a 14-1 outsider, finished third, followed by Air Vice Marshal and Conquest Tsunami, the 1-2 favorite. Law Abidin Citizen earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96. Conquest Tsunami set the early pace but faded in the final quarter-mile. Tiago Pereira rode Law Abidin Citizen in the $100,702 San Simeon. Law Abidin Citizen was two lengths behind Conquest Tsunami with three furlongs remaining. Law Abidin Citizen has won 4 of 7 starts on the hillside turf course. “He’s been very good down this course,” trainer Mark Glatt said. Law Abidin Citizen, a 5-year-old gelding by Twirling Candy, has won 5 of 19 starts and earned $298,665. Owned by Dan Agnew, Gerry Schneider and John Xitco, Law Abidin Citizen won his first stakes in the San Simeon Stakes.
