Penn National: Former Gulfstream racing secretary David Bailey hired to replace retired Paul Jenkins

David Bailey, whose 27 years as a racing official included a long stint at Gulfstream Park, has been named the new race secretary at Penn National Race Course.

Bailey, 58, spent the last two years as assistant to Paul Jenkins, who retired on April 3. Prior to coming to Penn National in July 2009, Bailey was the racing secretary at Gulfstream from 2000 to 2007. He also worked as either the head racing secretary or assistant at Arlington Park and Hialeah Park.

One of Bailey's first tasks will be to insert eight makeup cards into the remainder of Penn National’s 2011 calendar. Earlier this week, the track and horsemen were granted permission by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission to add programs lost to winter weather-related cancellations.

All of the additional live racing dates will take place on Wednesday nights, beginning with June 1. Midweek cards have also been added to the regular Monday-Tuesday-Friday-Saturday schedules for July 6 and 27, Oct. 19 and 26, and Nov. 2, 9, and 16. Post time remains at 6 p.m. Eastern.
