ELMONT, N.Y. – Oleksandra, who scratched out of the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes on June 5 when the Belmont turf course came up with some give in it, will try to stretch out to a mile in the Grade 3, $250,000 Poker Stakes here June 20, owner Barry Irwin said Friday. Oleksandra, who beat the boys in the 2020 Jaipur at six furlongs, has only tried a mile once, that being a two-turn race at Del Mar in November 2018 when she set the pace and faded to ninth. “We only tried it once and the ride didn’t come out like we wanted,” Irwin said. “She’s a late-running, one-turn horse. She switches off. I don’t think she’s going to have a stamina limitation.” The Jaipur was won by Casa Creed, who made a big run from off the pace, defeating stablemate Chewing Gum who rallied from last. :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Belmont Park Clocker Report “It’s a shame that turf had some cut in the ground last week,” Irwin said. “That’s exactly how she wants to run. If there’s any moisture in it, she’s useless.” The Poker is shaping up a solid race. Raging Bull, the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile winner, is expected to run along with potentially another Chad Brown-trained runner such as Delaware or Flavius. Get Smokin, Penalty, Raased, Sanctuary City, and Tell Your Daddy are among the others expected. ◗ Happy Saver, the 2020 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner, who made a successful 4-year-old debut in an allowance here on May 28, worked a half-mile in 50.31 seconds on Friday morning over the Belmont Park training track. Happy Saver, who is pointing to the Grade 2, $400,000 Suburban here on July 3, worked in company with the filly Spice Is Nice, the Allaire duPont winner. The pair went off in 26.18 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.93. Spice Is Nice is pointing to the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis on June 26 at Churchill Downs.
