ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Arlington Classic originally was called the Classic Stakes and first was contested in 1921. Until 1994, it was run on dirt between one mile and 1 1/4 miles, and its roster of winners bursts with Hall of Fame horses. Times change, races change, and in its current form, the Classic is a 1 1/16-mile grass race with a $100,000 purse, one of a multitude of options at this time of year for horsemen with 3-year-old grass runners. It drew a field of 10, and while there are no stars, the field is solid and closely matched. Arlington Classic, Race 8 KEY CONTENDERS Fast and Accurate, by Hansen Last 3 Beyers: 64-82-77 ◗ The 17th-place Kentucky Derby finisher is this race’s only graded-stakes winner, and while the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes is a Polytrack race, Fast and Accurate also is a turf-stakes winner. ◗ Whether you love him or not, the past performances strongly suggest that Fast and Accurate, one of three Mike Maker-trained entrants, will control the pace Saturday, and that makes him dangerous. Parlor, by Lohnro Last 3 Beyers: 80-66-80 ◗ He won a productive Ellis Park maiden race on debut and probably would’ve won the rich Kentucky Downs Juvenile without encountering trouble. ◗ Got a perfect trip in his Tamp Bay Downs allowance win but also got his last quarter-mile in 23.03 seconds while barely asked. ◗ He fought the rider to his own detriment early in the American Turf last out at Churchill and might not have loved a wet course. Sakonnet, by Scat Daddy Last 3 Beyers: 78-74-74 ◗ He’s a maiden but has run well in all three starts, twice posting the fastest come-home fraction. ◗ Two starts back, he ran into Yoshida, who looked like the best 3-year-old grass horse in North America last weekend at Pimlico. ◗ Last out, he stumbled at the start, losing position, and then laid on horses in upper stretch, which cost him the victory despite a powerful late surge. ◗ Trainer Tony Granitz, who adds blinkers to his charge, is 20-5-1-3 with a $3.54 return on investment in Arlington turf-route races for 3-year-olds over the last three years. Gorgeous Kitten, by Kitten’s Joy Last 3 Beyers: 83-73-68 ◗ Improving Maker trainee got a good trip in winning a nine-furlong, first-level allowance race at Keeneland last out but finished strongly. ◗ Maker in graded turf-route stakes for 3-year-olds over the last five years away from Arlington is 32-4-6-2 with a $2.44 ROI. At Arlington, he’s 16-1-3-2 with a $0.77 ROI. Cowboy Culture, by Quality Road Last 3 Beyers: 80-73-90 ◗ Was the best young turf horse at Fair Grounds, beating Louisiana Derby winner Girvin on grass. ◗ Has regressed in his last two starts, and while wide last out at Keeneland, he came home sixth at one pace. ◗ Typically high-percentage trainer Brad Cox over the last five years at Arlington is 16-1-4-4 with a $0.23 ROI.
