The Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championships move to Monmouth Park for its championship round Saturday with four $100,000 stakes corresponding to the tour’s different divisions. The series began at Laurel Park in April and then moved on to Penn National in June, Delaware Park in July, and Parx Racing in September. Not all of Saturday’s stakes entrants are participating for MATCH purposes; a good number are running solely for the purse money at hand. But here’s where the series stands. Ms Locust Point has competed in the first four legs of the MATCH Series and comes into the six-furlong Regret Stakes clinging to narrow leads in the overall standings and the filly and mare dirt-sprint division. Bronx Beauty, who is right behind her on both leaderboards, has finished ahead of Ms Locust Point in three straight races and will have home-field advantage in the Regret. Currently, Ms Locust Point leads Bronx Beauty 31-25, but Bronx Beauty will earn a 5-point bonus in the Regret for starting in four legs of the series, just as Ms Locust Point did last time out in the Roamin Rachel Stakes at Parx. Ms Locust Point will earn an additional 2-point bonus in the Regret for running in all five rounds, so when the gates open Ms Locust Point will be ahead of Bronx Beauty 33-30. The Regret scoring, based on finish position, is 10-7-5-3-2 and 1 point for sixth through last place. If Bronx Beauty and Ms Locust Point tie for the overall championship or division title, Bronx Beauty will win the tiebreaker based on her number of wins in the series. The owner of the overall champion will receive a $50,000 bonus, and the horse’s trainer will be awarded $25,000. The owner and trainer of each division winner will receive $20,000 and $15,000, respectively. There also are bonuses for the second- and third-place finishers in each division. Ms Locust Point is owned by Cash Is King LLC and Jim Reichenberg and based at Parx with trainer John Servis. Bronx Beauty races for 2W Stables LLC and is stabled at Monmouth with trainer Anthony Margotta Jr. In the first leg of the series, Ms Locust Point held on to win by a nose over Cairenn in the Primonetta Stakes, a race Bronx Beauty did not contest. Ms Locust Point was outfinished by Bronx Beauty in the Penn Ladies Dash, when second by 1 1/2 lengths, then dropped a neck decision to Bronx Beauty after a heated battle in the Dashing Beauty Stakes. Most recently, Bronx Beauty finished third by two lengths and Ms Locust Point fifth by 3 1/2 lengths in the Roamin Rachel. Laki has wrapped up the dirt-sprint division for 3-year-olds and up for the second year in a row. He will be the only 2018 divisional winner to repeat. Owned by Hillside Equestrian Meadows and trained by Laurel-based Damon Dilodovico, Laki has 18 points after winning the Frank Whiteley Jr. at Laurel, finishing fourth in the Chocolate Town Sprint at Penn, and third in the Bensalem at Parx. The most points he can earn Saturday in the Mr. Prospector is 15 – 10 for a win plus a 5-point participation bonus – which would put him one point behind Ms Locust Point’s minimum score, assuming she starts. Here’s a look at the Saturday stakes, which are races 6-9 on a 10-race card: Mr. Prospector: Laki figures to have his hands full in this six-furlong sprint, which includes the improving Jorge Navarro-trained pair of Benefactor and Whyruawesome; Lasting Legacy, who races for Jason Servis; and the Michelle Nevin-trained Wonderful Light, who was scratched from last week’s De Francis Memorial Dash and on Saturday is cross-entered in the restricted Challedon Stakes at Laurel, which looks like an easier spot. Benefacator, Whyruawesome, and Lasting Legacy all have speed, which should set the table for Laki, if he is good enough to take advantage. Lasting Legacy battled to a neck decision over Benefactor in their last start, with both earning 103 Beyer Speed Figures. Rainbow Heir: The key MATCH players in this 5 1/2-furlong turf race are Abiding Star (17 points), Completed Pass (15), and Paret (12). Completed Pass will earn a 5-point participation bonus. All three have knocks against them. Abiding Star and Paret are not proven at this shorter distance, and Completed Pass will be making his first start since mid-July when he missed the break and finished last going 7 1/2 furlongs. The horses to fear are the Jason Servis duo of Pocket Change, who will be making his first start of the year, and Fig Jelly. Justaholic and Powell also figure. Regret: Bronx Beauty and Ms Locust Point will be keeping tabs on each other, as they have the entire MATCH Series. Bronx Beauty appears to have the upper hand, but both horses have had a busy summer and need to look out for comebacking Satisfy, who races for Bill Mott. Liz’s Cable Girl and Everlasting Secret also are contenders. Violet: Dynatail is 2 for 2 in MATCH races this year, having won the Susquehanna at Penn and the PTHA President’s Cup at Parx for trainer Mike Dini. She is based at Monmouth and has a good chance to three-peat in Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares. Lift Up, at age 5, is in peak form for Michael Dickinson. She has won stakes at Woodbine and Mountaineer in her last two starts, will be doing her best running late, and may go off favored. Leading rider Nik Juarez is named. Lift Up is cross-entered in the $150,000 All Along at Laurel on Saturday but will race at Monmouth.
