After briefly entertaining the idea of bringing the multiple stakes winner Mo Plex back to the races in Saturday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham Stakes, the decision was made to skip that race and instead run him in the $125,000 Gander Stakes for New York-breds on March 8. Mo Plex, a son of Complexity, won 3 of 5 starts last year, including the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes and the restricted Funny Cide Stakes at Saratoga. After finishing third in the Grade 1 Champagne, Mo Plex ran second in the Sleepy Hollow, 1 1/2 lengths behind Sacrosanct. Sacrosanct will run as one of the choices in Saturday’s Gotham. Trainer Jeremiah Englehart said he was game to run in the Gotham, but owners Rick Higgins and Howard Read were content to start off in the Gander. “Rick and Howard have done a really good job helping me manage him, they have no qualms in having a really nice New York-bred,” Englehart said. “If it turns out he can win more open races, that’s great.” Englehart said Mo Plex had wintered at the Travis Durr training center in South Carolina and began working there before shipping to him at Belmont Park. Englehart may run a second horse in the Gander in Sunday Gilt, who is coming off an eight-length maiden victory Jan. 4 in what was his fourth career start. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
