Maximum Security, the champion 3-year-old male of 2019 and winner of the $20 million Saudi Cup in February, worked a half-mile in 49.60 seconds on Monday at Santa Anita, the colt’s first workout since joining trainer Bob Baffert’s stable earlier this spring. Baffert said he hopes to race Maximum Security this summer. “We’re getting to know him,” Baffert said. “He’s a classy horse. He worked by himself. I’m getting him used to the way I do things.” :: Start earning weekly cashback on your wagering today. Click to learn more. In early March, owner Gary West moved Maximum Security from trainer Jason Servis to Baffert after Servis was arrested and indicted on charges of administering illegal substances to horses. Servis has entered a not-guilty plea to the charges. Saudi Arabian racing officials announced in mid-April that the purse of the Saudi Cup was being withheld, pending their own investigation into the charges. Maximum Security arrived at Baffert’s stable in April after being given a rest following the Feb. 29 Saudi Cup. “He came in a very healthy horse,” Baffert said. “He’s a beautiful horse, stout. We haven’t had any issue with him at all.” Maximum Security finished first in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, but was disqualified and placed 17th for causing interference on the turn. Maximum Security has won 8 of 10 starts. Last year, Maximum Security won three Grade 1 races – the Florida Derby in March, Haskell Invitational in July, and the Cigar Mile in December. Baffert worked two other notable older horses Monday – Game Winner, the champion 2-year-old male of 2018, and McKinzie, a multiple Grade 1 winner – and the unbeaten 3-year-old Charlatan. Game Winner worked a half-mile in 48.80 for a return to racing this summer. Game Winner, owned by Gary and Mary West, has not raced since a win in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby last July. McKinzie, who finished 11th of 14 in the Saudi Cup, worked a half-mile in 47.20 for a scheduled start in the Grade 2 Triple Bend Stakes at seven furlongs on Sunday at Santa Anita. McKinzie won the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga last August and was second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at 1 1/4 miles last November at Santa Anita. Charlatan, who won a division of the Arkansas Derby on May 2 at Oaklawn Park, worked five furlongs in 1:00.80. Baffert said Charlatan is under consideration for two Grade 1 stakes at Belmont Park on June 20 – the $1 million Belmont Stakes at 1 1/8 miles or the $250,000 Woody Stephens Stakes at seven furlongs. “The next work will decide,” Baffert said. “Nothing is set in stone.” Charlatan’s win in the Arkansas Derby is under review by state regulators after an initial post-race test revealed the presence of a regulated therapeutic medication, sources told Daily Racing Form in late May. If a second test confirms the findings of the initial test, Charlatan could be disqualified from the Arkansas Derby.
