Fully recovered from the relatively minor illness that briefly took him out of training and cost his connections any chance of a start in the Pegasus World Cup, 4-year-old Maxfield returned to the work tab Saturday with a half-mile drill in 49.80 seconds. “He looked good and he came back good,” said Brendan Walsh, who trains Maxfield for Godolphin and was traveling from New Orleans to Florida when reached by phone Tuesday. “It seems like he got over that little hiccup just fine. Maxfield has won all four of his starts, including the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity in 2019. He came back from an injury layoff to win the Matt Winn Stakes in May, but hurt himself again, and got back to racing with a comfortable Dec. 19 tally in the Tenacious Stakes. Walsh said he and Godolphin are keeping options open for Maxfield’s next race. The spot at Fair Grounds is the Mineshaft on Feb. 13, the same day as the Razorback at Oaklawn Park. “Once we do some more work with him, we’ll see how that goes and then come up with an idea,” Walsh said.
