DEL MAR, Calif. - Masochistic will start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 5 with an unbeaten record this year. Masochistic was the easy winner Saturday of the $200,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar against two overmatched rivals. Trainer Ron Ellis on Sunday reiterated his plan for Masochistic to make his next start in the BC Sprint. In the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien, Masochistic led throughout to win by 3 3/4 lengths over Vyjack, a millionaire multiple-stakes winner. Masochistic won his first start of 2016 in an optional-claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on July 8 by 6 1/4 lengths. Ellis considers Masochistic to be in peak form this year. “He duplicated his last race and it’s pretty exciting,” Ellis said. “Sometimes they can run a freakish race, but when they do it back-to-back it’s legit. He was just galloping down the backstretch.” Owned by Samantha Siegel and Will Shamlian, Masochistic was last of 14 in the BC Sprint at Keeneland last October, emerging from the race with a hind leg injury that required a lengthy rest. A 6-year-old, Masochistic has won 8 of 13 starts and has earned $772,550. :: Enjoy news and analysis from DRF? Get handicapping analysis, real-time coverage, special reports, and charts.
