Trainer Rodrigo Madrigal Sr. recorded his 1,000th career victory when he sent Astonishing out in the third race Friday at Thistledown. Astonishing was ridden by Huber Villa Gomez. Madrigal, a 69-year-old native of Mexico City, began his racing career as a jockey in the 1950s and was also a jockey agent and full-time bullfighter through the 1960s. He lodged his first victory as a trainer with Reggie's Winner at Thistledown in 1979. He is the father of jockey Rodrigo Madrigal Jr. who has been a top rider at Philadelphia for the past 10, years and local trainer Raquel Castro.
