Little Rocket, who came to Finger Lakes earlier this month still eligible for a first-level allowance, earned her first stakes victory Saturday when she blew past tiring pacesetter Miss Rubycubes in the stretch of the $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares. The 4-year-old Little Rocket ($5.20) gave trainer Michael Ferraro his fourth overall win in the Susan B. Anthony, a six-furlong sprint that marked the first stakes of the season at the western New York track. Ferraro also won the race last year with Capella Dancer. Little Rocket, now 2 for 2 since coming to Finger Lakes, had her task made easier when odds-on favorite Clear Pasaj was scratched at the gate. Miss Rubycubes, winner of last season’s New York Oaks, looked like she might steal the race when she sprinted to a clear lead and was two lengths in front through a half-mile in 46.17 seconds. She was still a length in front at the eighth pole, but Little Rocket, ridden by Daniel Vergara, closed strongly and drew clear to win by five lengths, completing the distance in 1:11.45. Haldane, who raced in second chasing Miss Rubycubes throughout the race, held the runner-up spot, finishing 1 ¾ lengths in front of Miss Rubycubes. Make the Moment, who inherited the role of odds-on favorite following the late scratch of Clear Pasaj, finished last. A daughter of Yes It’s True owned by Barry Schwartz, Little Rocket is now 5 for 12 lifetime with earnings of $196,790.
