OLDSMAR, Fla. – Only five horses signed up to face Tepin in last year’s Grade 3, $150,000 Endeavour Stakes, and a similarly small group is likely for this year’s edition of the turf route at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 11, when the champion turf mare will seek a repeat win. One possible contender emerged here Sunday, when Light In Paris returned from a long layoff to win a no-conditions, $25,500 allowance. With leading jockey Daniel Centeno aboard, Light In Paris stalked in third place for much of the optional $100,000 claiming race and got up in time to win by a neck over the stakes winner Royal Jewely, with the stakes winner Lots o’ Lex another neck back in third. The final time for 1 1/16 miles on “good” turf was 1:42.02, significantly faster than Tepin’s winning time of 1:42.91 on firm turf in last year’s Endeavour. Tepin was making her 2016 debut in that spot and was only minimally urged before prevailing by 3 1/2 lengths. Light In Paris, an Irish-bred 5-year-old mare by Aussie Rules, was making her first start since finishing a creditable fourth in the Grade 3 Suwannee River Stakes at Gulfstream Park last February. In her prior start, in December 2015, she lost by half a length to Tammy the Torpedo when third in the $80,250 Tropical Park Oaks at Gulfstream. “She ran great considering her long layoff,” trainer Chad Brown said of Sunday’s race, adding that he hasn’t decided whether Light In Paris will run in the Endeavour. Owned by Martin S. Schwartz, Light In Paris is winless in four U.S. starts but won four of her nine starts in France.
