Killybegs Captain scored his biggest career victory Saturday at Laurel, taking the Grade 3, $250,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash by three-quarters of a length over an unlucky Altissimo. Killybegs Captain has come into his own at age 5 for trainer John Terranova II and entered the De Francis Dash off a third in the Forego, his first Grade 1 try. He is now 6 for 24 in his career. Old Time Revival sprinted off to a clear early lead in the six-furlong De Francis, spreading out the field behind him. Altissimo raced closest to the leader early and began to close the gap in upper stretch. Altissimo was making up ground when Old Time Revival drifted out in front of him, momentarily stopping his momentum. Meanwhile, Killybegs Captain and jockey Eric Cancel had clear sailing inside Old Time Revival. “I let the speed go to the front,” Cancel said. “He’s a grinder and he comes to do his job. I thought he ran very well last time in his first Grade 1.” Killybegs Captain paid $7.80 as the second betting choice. He covered the course in 1:08.10. He Hate Me, the 6-5 favorite raced outside the winner early but lacked the needed response and finished third, 3 1/4 lengths behind Altissimo. It was another two lengths back to New York Central in fourth. Sensible Lady Turf Dash: Goldwood wins again Goldwood ran her heart out to score her fifth consecutive stakes victory in the $100,000 Sensible Lady Turf Dash, a 5 1/2-furlong sprint for fillies and mares. Goldwood chased Escapade virtually the entire race to win by a half-length. Fire Key rallied outside the top pair in the stretch and nailed Escapade late to get second by a head. Goldwood was hard-ridden throughout by jockey Jose Ferrer, who has been aboard for her entire streak. “The leader was going fast but my horse likes to be close to the pace,” Ferrer said. Goldwood is a 5-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro who was bred and is owned by Colts Neck Stables and trained by Jorge Duarte Jr. She is the only four-time stakes winner at the current Monmouth Park meet and is now 3 for 4 in her career over the Laurel turf. She paid $4.60 as the favorite in the 12-horse field and was timed in 1:01.69, a hair faster than males went in the prior race, the Laurel Dash. Escapade ran a very brave race at 9-2, carving out fractions of 21.53, 44.13, and 55.61. Al’s Gal finished fourth, a length behind Escapade. Weathervane: Meadow Dance wires field Kentucky shipper Meadow Dance won her third straight race in the $100,000 Weathervane, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies. Trained by Brad Cox, Meadow Dance outsprinted three rivals for the early lead in the nine-horse field, drew clear in upper stretch, and then held off Needs Supervision by a length. Meadow Dance returned $5.80 as the second wagering choice to 8-5 Needs Supervision, who finished four lengths in front of third-place Talkthetalk. Meadow Dance was timed in 1:09.37. She came into the Weathervane off allowance wins at Churchill Downs and Ellis Park under Shaun Bridgmohan. Local rider Sheldon Russell picked up the mount Saturday. “It’s always nice when your horse breaks on top,” Russell said. “The filly put me in a great spot and I just had to slow her down.” Needs Supervision, winner of the Silverbulletday at Fair Grounds in January for Laurel-based trainer Jeremiah O’Dwyer, was making her first start since February following a respiratory illness. She rated early, then finished well in an effort that should send her on to bigger stakes at longer distances down the road.
