OCEANPORT, N.J. – Ju Ju Eyeballs, a Monmouth Park stakes winner last year on both turf and dirt, makes her season debut here Friday in a very interesting spot. She tops the $42,000 feature for filly and mares going five furlongs on grass. The second-level allowance includes an option for $30,000 claimers. Ju Ju Eyeballs, somewhat surprisingly, is in for the tag. DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 3 Ju Ju Eyeballs. Trainer Jason Servis is 1 for 10 with a $0.60 ROI over the past two years with fillies and mares returning from a layoff of at least 180 days. Ju Ju Eyeballs went 5-1-3 in nine starts in 2013, banking $169,280. Along the way, she won the Crank It Up Stakes on turf and the Just Smashing Stakes on dirt in consecutive Monmouth starts. She was third in her season finale, the $100,000 Maryland Million Distaff Handicap in October. The claiming option opens the door for an easier comeback spot. It also could be her finale for Servis & Co. The claim box has been ablaze at Monmouth. Last weekend alone, 26 horses were claimed in only a three-day span. A fresh 4-year-old winner of almost $170,000 last season should attract some browsers, if not several eager buyers. “We only paid $15,000 for her, and she made us a lot of money last year,” Servis said. “If she gets claimed for the $30,000, we’ll turn the page. If it’s the last race for us, it sure was a good run.” Ju Ju Eyeballs has post 2 in the eight-horse field. Gabriel Saez rides the filly, who is 2 for 2 over this course. The Andrew Rosen-owned entry of Perfect Package and Recoupe looks primed for a big effort. Perfect Package, from the Eddie Plesa Jr. barn, should be sharper for her second start of the season. She was fourth earlier this month in a similar spot as the 17-10 favorite. Leading rider Paco Lopez has the return call. Recoupe, the other half of the entry, ships up from Maryland for trainer Michael Trombetta. The lone 3-year-old in the race, Recoupe is 2 for 2 since switching to turf sprints. She reunites here with jockey Trevor McCarthy. Too Clever by Half is the veteran in the group at age 6. She will be bidding for her 10th win; seven of her victories have come in grass sprints. Danalake, Jessie Can Mambo, Allaboutcaroline and Previous Honor complete the field.
