OPELOUSAS, La. – Racing with the pace from the start, the favored Joy of the Saints outkicked a stubborn Miss Molly B to win Saturday night’s $100,000 filly division of the D. S. “Shine” Young Futurity. Miss Molly B never caved in after racing with the winner throughout and finished just a half-length back in second and 1 1/4 lengths in front of fellow longshot Golden Barbara. Trained by Ronnie Ward for Poindexter Thoroughbreds, Joy of the Saints ($5.80) was ridden by Filemon Rodriguez and won for the second time in as many starts after breaking her maiden debut with ease at Louisiana Downs in mid-May. The daughter of Saint Afleet covered the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:06.42 over a fast track. In the colt and gelding division, it was Union Builder ($59.00) who pulled off the upset after stalking the pace under the kind handling of Joe Patin Jr. Smudge finished a neck back after contesting the pace throughout, followed by Runaway Ide, who was five lengths back in third. Union Builder is trained by Pat Devereux and owned by Coteau Grove Farms. The homebred son of Yankee Gentlemen won for the first time in two starts and was clocked in 1:05.33. In the evening’s other stakes action, Benwill ($5.40) controlled the pace throughout in the inaugural running of the $40,000 Red, White and Blue Stakes at a mile on the turf. Bauers Got Hours reported home 2 1/4 lengths back in second followed by Spendiferous. Benwill is trained by Mike Burgess and was ridden by leading rider Diego Saenz. The 5-year-old son of Leestown won for the fifth time in 19 starts and picked up his second stakes win of the meeting after accounting for the John Henry Stakes in late April. The final time over firm going was 1:37.46.
