OPELOUSAS, La. – Joy of the Saints, the winner of the fillies’ division of last month’s D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity at Evangeline and whose victory in last Saturday’s Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Louisiana Downs improved her record to a perfect 3 for 3, probably will make her next start against open company in the $100,000 My Trusty Cat at Delta Downs on Oct. 24. That according to trainer Ronnie Ward, who said his young stable star emerged from her latest conquest in good shape. Two less likely options for Joy of the Saints include the $100,000 Evangeline Starlet at six furlongs on dirt Aug. 30 or the $75,000 Happy Ticket, slated for a mile on turf on the Super Derby undercard Sept. 6 at Louisiana Downs. The Louisiana-bred daughter of Saint Afleet is not eligible for the $100,000 fillies’ division of the Louisiana Stallion Stakes, also scheduled for Super Derby Day. “The two races at Evangeline and Louisiana Downs are a little close to her last start,” Ward said this week. “She’s 3 for 3 now and has been awfully good for us. She’s just a 2-year-old, and we don’t want to knock her out. There are a lot of opportunities for her going forward.” At seven furlongs over the six-furlong Delta oval, the My Trusty Cat would be Joy of the Saints’s first attempt at two turns but not her first try against open company. She defeated open maiden special weight foes in her debut in May. Ward said the added distance should not pose a problem. “I’ll think she’ll route,” he said. “She sure relaxed nicely for us the other day.
