LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A horse named Johnny Unleashed used to chase, fruitlessly, the brilliant turf sprinter Golden Pal around Kentucky grass courses. Wednesday at Churchill Downs, they all were chasing Johnny Unleashed’s little brother, Joe Shiesty, who never wavered after setting a breakneck pace, winning the $291,000 William Walker Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths. There were plenty of very quick horses in the William Walker, a 5 1/2-furlong contest restricted to 3-year-olds, but it took Joe Shiesty only 10 strides to establish a lead. Pressed through splits of 22.05 and 44.96 by Silent Heart, Joe Shiesty turned for home, straightened away, and showed no sign of giving way. “I was just letting my horse do it on his own,” said winning rider Abel Cedillo. “I didn’t take a hold of him at all, and he just took me home from there. When he switched leads, I’m like, ‘Oh, I still have horse left.’ ” Joe Shiesty, who paid $61.06, got two assists on his way to victory. Little closing took place over Churchill’s refurbished grass course in the Walker. “We were going really fast, but nobody was stopping,” said John Velazquez, rider of Silent Heart, who was nipped for second at the wire. “It’s short grass, it’d been dry.” :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on PPs, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Secondly, Mansa Musa, the 2-1 favorite, nearly was dropped at the three-sixteenths pole. Beginning to launch a rally, Mansa Musa was badly fouled by Irad Ortiz Jr. on No Nay Mets, who came out without clearance, forcing Junior Alvarado to check hard. “I was about to turn him loose,” said Alvardo. “It was bad. I just closed my eyes and hoped for the best. I thought I was going down.” No Nay Mets closed for second but was disqualified to fourth, moving Silent Heart up to second and an unlucky Mansa Musa to third. Sketch, an English import who was able to make his American debut after drawing into the Walker, finished fastest after breaking last and was an encouraging fifth. Reef Runner and Smokey Smokey were scratched from the field’s main body. Joe Shiesty was timed in 1:02.90.  Eric Foster trains Joe Shiesty for Foster Family Racing, Lonnie Reynolds, Vicki Mills, and Donald Coomes. A son of Air Force Blue and Ready to Unleash, by More Than Ready, Joe Shiesty was bred in Kentucky by Rodney Orr. Joe Shiesty, making his turf debut Wednesday, wintered at Turfway Park, racing on Tapeta. After scoring a fast, front-running maiden win in December, he came back 16 days later and was a distant third Jan. 6 in the Turfway Prevue. The gelding won an allowance race March 8 and faded to fifth in the Animal Kingdom on just 15 days’ rest. “I knew he was fast before I ever saw him,” said Foster, who also trained Johnny Unleashed. “I have to take the blame for both stakes tries. He runs so hard, and I ran him back too fast.” Wednesday at Churchill, Joe Sheisty raced with plenty of rest and ran too fast for anyone to catch him. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
