Three-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel was arrested and jailed Saturday night in Evansville, Ind., for driving under the influence. Borel, 44, took off his Sunday mounts at Ellis Park in nearby Henderson, Ky., where he has been riding this summer. Evansville television station WTVW reported Sunday morning that Borel was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail and was being held without bond, but Borel’s longtime agent, Jerry Hissam, said the jockey was released Saturday night, shortly after being jailed. The arrest occurred at about 10 p.m. Central on U.S. 41, the main north-south highway that runs through Evansville and alongside Ellis. The station reported Borel was pulled over by Indiana State Police for making an unsafe lane movement. Hissam said Borel’s blood-alcohol content was “barely over” the legal limit of .08 percent. Borel is the only jockey in Derby history to win the race three times in a four-year period, having scored on Street Sense (2007), Mine That Bird (2009), and Super Saver (2010). He has ridden more than 4,800 winners in nearly three decades of riding and was a first-time nominee to the Racing Hall of Fame this year.
