OCEANPORT, N.J. – Jewel of a Cat faced a stiff test last time, tackling males for the first time in Monmouth Park’s John McSorley Stakes. Arguably, it was the race of her life. Hard pressed to maintain the lead under pressure from Two Notch Road, Jewel of a Cat finally shook off that rival and continued on gamely to finish second, beaten less than one length while earning a career-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure. The 4-year-old Jewel of a Cat is back with fillies and mares Sunday in the $60,000 Klassy Briefcase at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf. In theory, this should be an easier spot, but the Klassy Briefcase is loaded. The race drew a full field of 12, with two more on the also-eligible list. Ju Ju Eyeballs, a two-time stakes winner here last summer, will be making her 2014 debut. Her bang-up 2013 summer included victories in the Crank It Up on grass and the Just Smashing on dirt. She could be vulnerable, considering a layoff since October and the fact that she was entered, and subsequently scratched, from a $30,000 claimer last month. Fitness shouldn’t be an issue for Jewel of a Cat. This will be her third start of a campaign that started with The Very One Stakes on the Preakness undercard. She was fourth that day and might have “needed the race,” said trainer Ben Perkins Jr. “Then we were going to sit and wait for the Klassy Briefcase, but she was doing so good,” Perkins said. “With turf races, you don’t know if they’ll be on or off, and she was ready when the boy race came up. We decided to run her, and she ran real well.” That was a bit of an understatement. A strong case can be made that it was her best effort, on a par with the victory in the Coronation Cup at Saratoga last summer. “That last race seemed to help her, and she came out of the race good. She’s good to go for Sunday,” Perkins said. Jason Servis and brother-in-law Eddie Plesa Jr. each send out two uncoupled runners. In addition to Ju Ju Eyeballs, Servis saddles Indian Splendor, a sharp second-level allowance winner here most recently. What a Party missed by only a head for Plesa in the Safari Queen Stakes at Gulfstream Park, while Perfect Package makes her stakes debut.
