SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Jimmy Jerkens hopes to carry the momentum of his Grade 1 win with Afleet Express in last Saturday’s Travers into this Saturday, when he sends out Convocation in the Grade 1, $750,000 Woodward Stakes against Quality Road. Convocation is coming off a hard-fought second-level allowance win over Glenwood Canyon here on Aug. 4. Glenwood Canyon finished second in a similar spot on Monday. “The other horse ran the race of his life and the rail was very, very good that day and he was galloping along early and he had plenty left,’’ Jerkens said. “But he still got there and still got the money, and the final time was very good. If he had won by a neck and went a mile and an eight in 1:50, we probably wouldn’t think of running here. He has a good win going the distance on the track; that’s a big thing going into a stake.” On Tuesday, Convocation worked four furlongs in 48.66 seconds over the main track. He was very sweaty on a warm morning and came several paths off the rail in the stretch. Convocation galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.43 and pulled up six furlongs in 1:15.98.
