There are big fields and big purses on Owners Appreciation Day at Parx Racing this Saturday. The featured ninth race is the $100,000 Michael P. Ballezzi Mile, which is named in honor of the longtime executive director of the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. Parx has boosted the purses of its races Saturday to thank owners for their participation. Race 5, a maiden sprint for 2-year-olds, has a purse of $90,000. A $5,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares, race 6, is worth $48,000. Total purses on the card are $584,000. All 10 races have full fields and also-eligibles waiting to draw in. Carlos Guerrero holds a strong hand in the Ballezzi Mile, with the uncoupled duo of Spun to Run and Zanotti. The field also includes Phat Man, who is coming off a victory in the Good Magic Mile at Monmouth Park for trainer Kent Sweezey, and a wild card, Carlos L., a winner of 5 of 9 starts, all in Panama, including the Group 1 Gran Clasico Presidente de la Republica. He will be making his first start in the U.S. and first for Jorge Navarro, a native of Panama. Spun to Run has developed into one of the most promising 3-year-olds in the region for Guerrero. In three starts since returning from a four-month layoff, he has finished third in the Haskell Invitational, won the Grade 3 Smarty Jones at his home base of Parx, and finished fifth, beaten 1 1/2 lengths, in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby. A $64,000 buy by owner Robert Donaldson at the May 2018 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale in Timonium, Md., Spun to Run has earned $400,000. This is the easiest spot Spun to Run has been in this summer, and he should prove difficult to defeat from just off the pace under jockey Mychel Sanchez. Battle-hardened Zanotti would have fit well in this spot a year ago but has yet to hit the board in three races this year at 6. Still, Guerrero knows his horse well and it is a positive sign he has entered him at this level rather than waiting for something easier. Phat Man has improved since Sweezey signed the $65,000 ticket on the 5-year-old at the Fasig-Tipton July horses of racing age sale in Lexington, Ky. His Good Magic Mile victory should have him sitting on a top effort as he makes his third start following a 3 1/2-month layoff. Nik Juarez, who leads the Monmouth rider standings by a single win over Paco Lopez, will be in for the mount. It’s tricky to judge Carlos L.’s Panama form, but he went wire to wire to win the Gran Clasico Presidente de la Republica by 13 3/4 lengths and put together a 5-2-2 record from nine starts in his native country. Navarro has worked the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred seven times at Monmouth since Aug. 11, including a bullet five-furlong move from the gate in 59.60 seconds in early September.
